Franklin County Technical School in service learning project
Gretchen Werle RN, MSN, who serves as Teacher Advocate for Franklin County Technical School’s (FCTS) PV-HCOP students and as an instructor in the health technology shop at FCTS recently had an article published that appeared online in Techniques magazine located on the Association for Career and Technical Education website. In the article, Werle and the FCTS students in the health technology shop looked to answer a recent call from President Obama that asks all citizens, including students to serve their communities, through service learning. Service learning as defined by The National Commission on Service Learning is a, "teaching and learning approach that integrates community service with academic study to enrich learning, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities."
According to the California Department of Education a successful service learning project needs to address the following five aspects:
- Meet a real community need
- Integrate into and enhance the curriculum
- Coordinate with a community agency, another school, or the community at large
- Help foster civic responsibility
- Provide structured time for reflection
Werle, along with FCTS students in the health technology shop explored a community service learning project through a case study at the Franklin Adult Day Health Center, a local nursing facility. In the study, Werle demonstrated how the students at FCTS answered President Obama’s call.
