HCC is one of several regional partners funded by the University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute under the Pioneer Valley Health Careers Opportunity Program (PV-HCOP). PV-HCOP is a program sponsored by the United States Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The goal of the program is to create an allied health career workforce that reflects the racial and ethnic characteristics of the greater community, with special focus on assisting high school students from diverse backgrounds to enter and graduate from a health or allied health professions program (excluding nursing) at the associate's degree or bachelor's degree level and beyond. PV-HCOP is collaborating with the Springfield, Holyoke, and Franklin County public schools.
What will you do this summer?
HCSI 2010 Students will spend 4 weeks exploring health care and allied health care careers with presentations from HCC professors and many other health professionals. They will visit regional health care sites. They will emerse themselves in health-related, hands-on classroom experiments such as suturing pigs' feet, growing and analyzing cultures, and whipping up lunch in the HCC Culinary Arts Lab (aka kitchen). They will keep track of the number of miles they walked daily and learn why walking and other exercises are so important to health. They will create a HEALTH play under the guidance and direction of Enchanted Circle's Kate Dean. They will learn medical terminology, research and write papers on health careers, and keep daily journals on class experiences. They will also learn about health care delivery within different cultures, which will help them become more culturally competent professionals. An interactive session in Motivation and Leadership will students understand how to work together as a team and take leadership roles.
