Greenfield Middle School ELT health career exploration
PV-HCOP has collaborated with the DIAL/SELF RISE (Resources Invested for Student Excellence) program and Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield to bring a health career exploration after school program to Greenfield Middle School (GMS). Twenty students from 4th-7th grade that show an interest in health careers will participate in a GMS Extended Learning Time (ELT) health career exploration.
This is a six-week after school program that will be held on Monday – Friday at GMS and may include trips to neighboring Baystate Franklin. Students will be instructed by the GMS health teacher, AmeriCorps volunteers, and possibly Greenfield Community College students participating in their residency at Baystate Franklin.
The design of the course is not only to introduce the variety of health careers, but also to emphasize math and science skills required within a specialized health career. Each week will focus on a particular career and Monday – Wednesday’s curriculum will center on the relevant math and sciences required for the career. Each Thursday, Baystate Franklin will provide a speaker who works in that weeks highlighted career that will come to GMS and talk about all aspects of the profession i.e., education required, income, and science/math skills used everyday on the job among other things. The speakers will also bring in hands-on tools of the trade for the students to explore. Hospital tours are also being explored for this slot, but will have to wait until a H1N1 ban is lifted allowing the students to tour the facility. On Friday, the students will write a reflection or journal of the week’s activities.
